Lynda Williams, Elizabeth Woods, Brian Hades and friends at World Fantasy Con 2008 in Calgary AB

I did my my first World Fantasy Con earlier this year. A bit tired. But it was well worth the time spent seeing old friends and making new ones. Here are some of the people concerned.

Robert Charles Wilson does a wonderful job of giving us characters to feel for and care about in SPIN, Lynda. And he imparts a beautiful 'sense of wonder.' I recommended it two of my friends that don't ordinarly read SF and they loved it. It's one of the better ones and deserved the awards.

I think the reason for this is so much SF is written by scientists. Scientists make for good science, but alas, sometimes the ideas are technology is our saviour and the characterization and quality of the writing itself suffers. I'm currently reading THROUGH BLACK SPRUCE (Giller Prize winner) and the level of writing is superb. The characters are so well drawn, you immediately become a part of their lives. Another book I really enjoyed reading this year was THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE by Audrey Niffennegger. Robert Charles Wilson's Science Fiction seems to get it right, especially his novel SPIN.

I'm finding that there are some big ideas shooting around in graphic novels, not necessarily the super hero comic books, but when you step out of that, the graphic novel or comic can be a very potent form of storytelling. And as for the big philosophical questions, look no further than SF to deal with those questions. After all, it is a literature of ideas.

Hi Lynda,
That's *very* kind of you to send me a package -- I'll shoot off an email pronto. I'm very curious about your work. Actually, I'm just now getting back into comics -- mostly graphic novels. I've read a couple lately but I've decided to give it a bit of a break and read some prose. Though I am following THE STAND by Stephen King in its comic incarnation; I'm such a fan of the original work. The comic is done very well, with striking art.
Have a wonderful weekend, Lynda.

Hi Linda,
The cons I've been to here are Polaris and Ad Astra, and a few comic book cons here and there. I haven't been to a con in a while and I miss 'em. I love the pics on your page.
It's so nice to meet you. Love to hear more about your writing.
