What do you do ?
I work in the mental health field.
In the early nineties I wrote horror stories and was published in various small press publications in the United States. I was also a member of Ontario Hydra, founded by Science Fiction icon Judith Merril in 1987. Hydra members included Nebula and Hugo Award winner Robert J. Sawyer, Cory Doctorow, Tanya Huff and many others. It was a wonderful experience.
I enjoy reading sf and some fantasy. Of late I've been getting into graphic novels (latecomer).
I'm also a movie buff, and enjoy SF and Fantasy films if they are made well. For example, love Solaris and The Dark Knight, but wouldn't give Deathrace a second look. I'm a huge fan of LOST.
Currently reading 'Watchmen' by Alan Moore. Update: Finished WATCHMEN and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and now reading the charming novel, CORALINE by Neil Gaiman.
When I look at this picture, I hear that unforgettable Vangelis soundtrack and yes, dream of Rachael.

Really? I should try SPIN. For some reason I think I've classified it in my unconscious brain as a social thesis rather than a human story. Not that I object to the former, either. I just like the guts to be human via the characters.

I always thought of SF as a literature of ideas. I've been conducting an small personal wander in SF books from different times and places that I come across, however, and discovering that many of them echo just a few, simple ideas. One of them seems to be "Religion is repressive superstitious stuff / science equals enlightenment." Very 1600s! Doesn't fly as well in the era of global warming and global greed. Sadly. We need to rediscover ethics.

I have ambitions to do Okal Rel Universe stuff in comic book form. My big idea is "the message plays in all media". In other words, good stories can and should be expressed in multiple incarnations and interpretations. We are way too obsessed with form these days, not content.

Philosophy of Sci-Fi series and books interests me enough that I actually enrolled in masters degree in English to deal with the moral philosophy intrinsic or implied in various works by Canadian women writing SF. Just to narrow it down for the thesis. Life conspired against me in both good ways and bad ones, but 'philosophy' in one form or another remains a preoccupation of my interest in sci-fi.

Hi Mark! Thank you for inviting me to Sci-Fi Talk. Thank you Mark for giving me a good start.

Hi everybody... I mostly watch Sci-Fi, read some but not too much... wonder if I should write anything. Mark calls my spiritual interests "Cosmic Soap Opera" so I wonder if I should write any of it...maybe I make a lot of money! :)) ...

Okay: Is anybody here interested in the "philosophy" of StarGate?

Who has any idea of what the symbiotes are?

I go to VCON and Conversion mostly. I had a comic book period. Donated thousands of them to a museum a few years back. As to the writing ... send me a mailing address to lynda@okalrel.org and I'll send you a 'soul touch' package to give you a taste of what it's all about. I do that with people in the biz or likely converts to the cause - so to speak. I do a package or two a month on average.

Hi Mark. Wonder if we've crossed trails at any Canadian cons. Maybe not. I don't get out to many on the East side of the continent. I hadn't heard of Hydra before! Interesting.

We are definitely kindred spirits. I'm a non-commercial television watcher. The last time I watched commercial t.v., James T. Kirk was still in command of the Enterprise. But, I do watch scifi and fantasy t.v. series when they show up 'commercial free' on dvds. Besides, I like to see the whole series in big junks. I've never liked waiting a week for my next installment.

I've heard Lost is quite good. So, it's on my list to rent.
